Writing Sales Copy –Tips and Advice
Writing sales copy for online sales is a big challenge. The text has to convey the benefits of your product to the buyer. Hopefully, the prospective buyer already has a need for your product or services. Your job is to convince them that your product is good value for money, and will satisfy their needs.
Firstly, you must have a product that you can stand by; the price should be competitive; and you should offer the buyer an incentive. Be attentive to the needs of the buyer. Explain in plain English why they should buy your product - keep it simple and to the point.
When writing sales copy, focus on your Unique Selling Position (USP) - how is your product or service uniquely beneficial to the buyer? The USP should be something your competitors do not offer, or something your company does better than your competitors (price, quality, after sales service, etc.). The answers to this question will give you the basis for writing a compelling online sales message.
Include the following components in your sales copy, in the order of appearance.
1. Benefit Headline. Tell your customer exactly how they will benefit from buying your product now.
2. State your USP in easy to understand text. Let the buyer know they have found a unique solution to their specific need.
3. List the advantages of owning your product. This will keep them reading to discover if the product really is what they are looking for. Outline the details in 3 to 5 bullet points. Make each point clear and try to build desire in the mind of the reader.
4. In one purposeful sentence, restate the main benefit you stated in the headline.
5. Go into more detail about the best features of your product. This is important because buyers will make up their minds about the product based on what you say here.
6. Re-emphasize your USP.
7. Remember to ask the prospective buyer to purchase your product – it sounds basic but this aspect of sales is often overlooked. Experiment with different ways of asking the buyer to make the purchase.
8. Reinforce your request for purchase by adding an incentive. The closing part of a sales copy is the most important part. Include a good incentive to make the buyer purchase right away, such as a special, time-limited discount, or a freebie.
