Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
FAQs

People are intrigued by VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Many of the forums, VoIP internet groups, VoIP customer service etc. receive questions that are common among prospective VoIP users. The following are typical answers to those frequently asked questions (FAQs).

What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for voice over internet protocol. These are voice calls routed over internet networks using internet protocol. IP serves as the base of the internet on which all internet applications like website pages, emails, instant messages etc. reside.

How reliable is VoIP service?

The short answer is: VoIP is less reliable than landlines. As VoIP is fairly recent technology, there is still a lot of ongoing research and development to improve the reliability of VoIP. Whenever there is disruption of the broadband internet connection, the VoIP service will be impacted; if there is a power outage, the service cannot operate. Installing a UPS (Universal Power Supply) should solve this problem by providing an uninterrupted power supply.

What equipment do you need to use VoIP?

You will need the following equipment to use VoIP:
- Internet service: Preferably a broadband connection. (A dial-up connection will allow you to use VoIP but the quality will be very poor.)
- VoIP Software: This allows the computer to make calls to the internet through the modem connection.
- Adapter: This is needed only if you want to convert your home phone to make VoIP calls.

Can I surf the internet while using the VoIP phone?

Yes.

Can I use the current phone number after switching to VoIP?

Yes.

How secure is the VoIP service?

Voice over internet protocol is less secure compared to a landline phone. The landline phones can be tapped (wiretapped) but it requires physical access to the phone. VoIP calls can be easily intercepted by hackers. Installing a network security system will minimize such risks in VoIP.

How good is the VoIP service quality?

The VoIP service quality is currently quite good – it has improved significantly over the years. In the past there were numerous complaints from VoIP users about dropped calls and background noise - telecommunication companies are constantly researching ways to improve the quality.

What makes VoIP inexpensive compared to a Landline?

VoIP runs on the internet. If you already have an internet service, VoIP is just another application like email, instant messaging, etc. that can be distributed over the internet for free.

Why are some VoIP services free and some cost money?

If the VoIP call is made from one computer to another, then it’s free. But usually, people want to make phone calls to landline phones and mobile phones and in such cases the VoIP companies have to pay access fees to those other phone carriers. This cost may be passed on to the user.

Which VoIP service provider should you use?

It depends on your necessity. There are VoIP providers that offer per minute rates and there are those that are flat rates. If you make very few calls, then it’s better to use a per minute service, but a flat rate plan is better.

There are many other features offered, which can increase the Voice over internet protocol charges. If you do not need extra features, it might be better to choose another service package. Choosing a provider requires some research. For more details on how to choose a VoIP service provider, research the internet using keywords like “how to choose a VoIP provider” and “choosing VoIP service provider”.
