What is Podcasting?

What is Podcasting?

Podcasting is a fusion of the iPod and broadcasting. It refers to the process of disseminating multimedia files, either through music video, audio program, or via the internet through either an Atom syndication or an RSS format. This media can be played on personal computers or portable media-playing devices, like TV or radio. Podcasts often feature progammes with regular episodes.

How did Podcasting come about?

Podcasting emerged in 2000. Just one year later, the technical requirements for podcasting were met and podcasting was available to the public. Podcasting became popular with website hosts a couple of years later. Around this time, Adam Curry, a media entrepreneur, popularized the term "podcasting". Podcasting exploded in popularity and growth, and has become a new medium for disseminating information.

How does it work?

The podcasting method is quite straightforward. First, a podcast publisher creates audio content, usually in mp3 or mp4 format, and then uploads it to a server. The podcast is then published as a news feed in either RSS, XML or Atom format. The audience can subscribe to a particular podcast using a news-feed aggregator, which in turn updates them whenever a new episodes is released. This allows the subscribers to listen to or watch the podcast in their own time.

Why use it?

There is great potential in podcasting. First of all, a podcast is fun to produce. People are no longer limited to typed text, they can use the voice, the face and animation.

Podcasting is a great means of self expression that helps you to engage directly with your audience. They also help you to target and retain your audience as customers often sign up to receive news feeds. Podcasting empowers the podcaster. Distributing information would normally require a distributor. But with podcasting, you are your own media.

Money Making Potential

Podcasting has good money making potential. If you have something interesting to say and you think people will pay to hear about it, you could sell the content of your podcasts.

You can use podcasts to sell services or products by showing them why they will want to buy your products. You can also use podcasts to sell space for advertising by pitching in commercials.
